Dobruja is fantastic in all 4 seasons. In every season you can see spectacular places together with different species of birds. More then 360 species are here along the 4 seasons.

Location:

Dobruja – Dobrudja – Dobrudzha – Dobruca, or in Romanian Language – Dobrogea, is the same territory, a magic place, one of the most important station or destination for birds along Via Pontica, the second largest migration route in the world, from Nort Europe to Africa.

Dodruja is limited by the Danube on West and North sides by the Danube (in North by Chilia Branch, the Northern branch), in East by the Black Sea, in South (in Bulgaria) by the old border with Bulgaria.

Geography:

Even if the Danube Delta is a part of Dobruja, we separate the550.000 HA of wetland of the Danube Delta by the mainland of Dobruja.

Dobruja has the oldest mountains in Romania – Macin Mountains (467 m, the highest peak, Tutuiatu), has plains, has highlands, steppe, marshes and very few small rivers bat has the border with the large river, Danube. Dobruja has forests, bush lands, grasslands, marsh lands, sea beaches, fresh water lakes, saltwater lakes so you can imagine how many different habitats can you find here.

Seasons:

Spring – March, April, May – Of course is the MIGRATION time, you can see hundreds of species migrating along the Black Sea shore, over the hills or over the Macin Mountains. Temperatures are good to travel, are no insects (I mean mosquitoes and horseflies).

You can see a lot of shore birds along the sea shore, on salty lakes or on fresh water flooded areas. Thousands of raptors are migrating along the rocky hills or over Macin Mountains, on thermals. Thousands of passerines are in migration on meadows, forests and fields.

At the beginning of spring, Dobruja is absolutely fantastic, the best place for birding I know (and I know many!). After half of April also Danube Delta is very interesting for birding so you can choose a mixed tour, Dobruja and Danube Delta).

Summer – June, July, August – Summers in Dobruja are hot (very hot) and dry (very dry). Stars of this season are Blue Rollers, European Bee Eaters and Hoopoes, we know the best places for this birds, together with Little Owls, Sand Martin and many other species. In Summer, the tours are done EARLY in the morning and in the evening. At mid day is very painful to stay outside.

Autumn – September, October, November – The migration is starting early, in September is already on. Along the sea shore and in Macin Mountains is fabulous to watch birds in the morning. Some of them are just passing (many raptors and shore birds) but some of them will stay here for winter. Late in the autumn the Geese are coming also, including the Winter star – RBG Red Breasted Goose. Temperatures are again very good to travel.

Winter – December, January, February – Is Geese time and also Ducks time. It is cold, sometimes we have also snow (very rare even heavy snow) but the prize is huge. Flocks of White-Fronted Geese (and some Lesser also), RBG, Greylag Geese, Whooper Swans, Tundra Swans are on the fields, Shelduck, Tufted, Mallard, Gadwall, Pintail, Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal, Garganey, Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Ferruginous, Scaup, Long-tailed, Goldeneye, Smew, Goosander, Red-breasted Merganser, White-headed Ducks can be seen on waters everywhere in Dobruja (not really everywhere but we know where :-)). Of course, many raptors are following Geese and Ducks.
